Your guide, Carl Muir, has been fishing, diving and exploring the ocean on Tairua’s back doorstep since he was a young fella.
Carl fish learnt to fish, dive & gather a meal from the ocean, with his father. The many good times plus a realisation that many people around the world weren’t so fortunate to enjoy this abundance, inspired Carl to share the Coromandel’s natural beauty as a career.
After completing university, a quick stint in corporate land & travelling the world, becoming a scuba instructor and fishing deckhand, Carl moved back home to the Coromandel at the age of 30. He landed a dream job, marketing manager for the Coromandel tourism board, and settled in Tairua, starting a family, with the arrival first of a girl - Bella and then a boy - Oscar. Carl’s passion for seafood shone through starting up the Whitianga Scallop Festival, and developed the Coromandel’s ‘Good for Your Soul’ brand.
In 2005 Carl realised his dreams, starting his first tourism business Epic Adventures! Carl forged a name for himself as one of NZ’s top fishing guides. Training up more guides to keep up with demand, adding more boats, after ten massive years not only guiding but running every facet of the business he was pretty burnt out!! Carl decided to sell the business, spend more time with his family, and take stock of what he really wanted to be doing.
Carl spent some time out helping other aspiring business owners follow their passion, and of course there was a lot of time fishing and diving for leisure, and in this time of reflection, about what really mattered in life, and punching through some deep soul searching, the brand PROVIDER was born.
“We are so lucky in New Zealand to have such a precious resource. The ocean is our Provider, not only of fresh healthy, nutritious food, but a place where you can get away from it all, and completely recharge. I’m lucky that I get to spend a large proportion of my time on, in or around the ocean, and provide for my family, by sharing these gifts with visitors to town. There is no place quite like Tairua, come and take a step back, breathe in the goodness and take a look at what life is supposed to look like! It is good for your soul.”
Carl’s vision with Provider, is still very much centred on fishing and diving, but with more of a focus on looking after the resource, taking time to really take in the whole Coromandel experience, encompassing fresh nutritious food sourced from the ocean and his extensive gardens, and realising what fishing is really all about - wellbeing and a way of life.
Provider is about reconnecting humans back to nature and creation, through a personalised fishing and diving experience, which nourishes, rejuvenates and educates.
Carl still lives in Tairua, with his partner Tia, his children Bella and Oscar, and Tia’s son Noah.
He is also constantly seeking out new information, on human potential, resilience, natural medicine, lost ancient wisdom and wellbeing, and has recently studied a PreKure Health Coaching course.
Carl is available for guiding 7 days a week, but on his days off you will still find him exploring with his family, gathering a feed, and sharing the bounty over a good meal. It is that passion for the ocean and outdoors, and local knowledge that will shine through on a Coromandel fishing adventure or retreat with Carl.
