Good Man by Nathan Clarkson

I often find it interesting how good books find me.

This book, one of the best, is no exception.

I’d ventured to Hamilton for the day, for new tyres for my Landcruiser, which also ended up in new brakes having to be fitted. With some time to kill, I strolled away from the workshop, and the first shop I went past was a Christian book shop. I can’t say I have ever ventured inside one before, but for some reason I felt called in.

I got pulled to the back corner, and in front of me was a title that instantly hit me - as I’d just started the journey with running our Men’s Wellbeing Retreats.

The title was Good Man: An Honest Journey into Discovering Who Men Were Actually Created to Be” by Nathan Clarkson

Boom - that resonated! And randomly picking a page and reading it - I was drawn into Nathan’s authentic, easy to read writing style and honesty.

If you’re a man like me, that often reflects at how off path the human race has come - violence, homelessness, mental health issues, division, wars - this book is a well written wake up call and call to action for men to come back to who they were created to be.

It has formed the inspiration for a workshop I run at the end of our retreats on “What is a Good Man?”

The book calls us back into values that define good men - Honesty (with ourselves and others), Authenticity, Love, Brotherhood, Adventure and also calls us to stand up and Fight when it counts and matters.

I love how Nathan starts the book, looking back at himself as a boy, who longed to be a Hero.

The truth is, we are all a Hero in our own story, and there is no one quite like ourselves.

I challenge you to read this book - and you might not look at life quite the same again.
