As the most experienced fishing guide on the Coromandel, I do things a little different to others. My goal is to impart as much knowledge as I can, and read what is going on, on any given day, including most importantly, what you want to do, to provide the best day out possible.
I’ve been guiding for well over 20 years, and at the heart of what I offer is a deep shared connection to the ocean and local environment, and a passion for sharing something about the art of fishing on to my guests.
With an inbuilt knowing adn experience of what is happening on the water week by week, month by month, techniques range from stickbaiting, to jigging, livebaiting, softbaiting, straylining and trolling. We’re armed with all the latest gear, you just jump on an enjoy the day. From the moment we launch the boat, observation plays a bit part of the day, while we’ll have a game plan, this can change at any point of the day, based on how we’re reading the water and marine life - that is always the best thing about fishing!
If your intention is to put healthy kai on the table for your whanau, tread lightly, and learn more about our connection to the ocean, you’ve come to the right place.
We’ll put just as much attention into looking after your catch, making sure every last mouthful of any fish kept, is savoured, nose to tail, as we do in catching the fish. We’ll share a myriad of recipes and ideas for making the most of your catch. We also connect you in with the word class islands and landmarks you are adventuring near, rather than rushing past them, like the Ruamaahua, the Aldermen Islands.
The bounty offered up by Tangaroa might include, haku / kingfish, tāmure / snapper , marlin, swordfish, hapuku, bass, southern bluefin tuna, bluenose, or the tasty john dory. New Zealand has a year round abundant fishery, and it’s our collective responsibility to look after it.
Carl has guided sport fishing trips out of Tairua and Whitianga since 2005 when he started his first charter business.
His latest charter boat PROVIDER launched in 2017 is an enclosed cabin Senator 770. PROVIDER has a fully enclosed cabin with client seating around a central lure rigging table to keep you warm and dry on the way to the grounds, there is also comfy seating outside in the cockpit.
The ride and stability of the new Senator 770 is second to none. PROVIDER is a custom build with many features which make it the ultimate sport fishing day boat. Padded gunnels take the pressure off the angler fighting hearty fish like kingfish. The best state of the art FURUNO electronics help Carl not only find the fish, but show you the world that exists under the surface. Our boat has a central live bait tank with window and tuna tubes to seperate baits between drifts. PROVIDER is a dream boat that you will want to fish off time and time again. All top of the line jigging, top water, softbait and game fishing rods, reels and tackle provided from OKUMA and CDRODS. Just bring a positive attitude and kick back on the ultimate fishing boat.

With over 20 years guiding experience, and much reflection on providing a fruitful experience that treads lightly on our ocean, Carl offers a conscious fishing experience a little different from the norm. You will glean an abundance of information on marine life, the ecosystem, our part in preserving it, history, culture and geology, and personalised tips to build up your own fishing knowledge with tips and tricks. Carl’s passion is also in the kitchen so you will glean deep insights into savouring the most of your catch, with maximum nutritional benefits.
