Carl Muir

LEADER OF MEN, HEALTH COACH, FISHERMAN, Guide, Cook, Diver, wellbeing coach w lived experience, Storyteller, dad, partner, brother, Provider

Your guide, Carl Muir, has been fishing, diving and connecting deeply into the ocean (moana) and land (whenua) of the Coromandel since he was a young fella, taught the ways of the ocean by his Dad and grandfathers while growing up in small town New Zealand.

Leaving home to study and work in cities around the world, Carl saw the disconnect that exists these days between humans and nature, and specifically where healthy food come from. He gravitated back home at an early age to start a family and raise them by the sea, settling close to his home town, in Tairua. The first arrival was a girl - Bella and then a boy - Oscar. Carl’s passion for seafood shone through starting up the Whitianga Scallop Festival, and developed the Coromandel’s ‘Good for Your Soul’ brand.

In 2005 Carl realised his dreams, starting his first tourism business Epic Adventures! Carl forged a name for himself as one of NZ’s top fishing guides. Training up more guides to keep up with demand, adding more boats, after ten massive years not only guiding but running every facet of the business he was pretty burnt out!! Carl decided to sell the business, spend more time with his family, and take stock of what he really wanted to be doing.

Carl spent some time out helping other men follow their passion, and of course there was a lot of time fishing and diving with whanau, and in this time of reflection, about what really mattered in life, and punching through some deep soul searching, the brand PROVIDER was born.

We are so lucky in New Zealand to have such a precious resource. The ocean is our Provider, not only of fresh healthy, nutritious food, but a place where you can get away from it all, and completely recharge. In these times, I am reminded that we have everything we need, in nature and inside us, everything is provided for. I’m lucky that I get to spend a large proportion of my time on, in or around the ocean, and provide for my family, by sharing these gifts with visitors to town. There is no place quite like Tairua, come and take a step back, breathe in the goodness and take a look at what life is supposed to look like! It is good for your soul.

In 2018, going through a rough patch, Carl experienced what many men will encounter at some part of their life, a dark night of the soul. 3 weeks in an acute mental health unit, gave Carl the awareness there was a lack of accessible solutions out there for men in this position.

He has decidated his life since, to building a toolkit that not only keeps him resilient, but shares this lived experience and knowledge with other men. In 2019 Carl studied a PreKure Health Coaching course to compliment his lived experience.

Carl’s vision with Provider, is to reconnecting men back to nature, creation, and their inner power to heal, through experiences and programs, which nourish, rejuvenate and educate.

He is constantly seeking out new information, on human potential, resilience, movement, natural medicine, lost ancient wisdom and mens wellbeing.

Carl still lives in Tairua, with his wife Tia (Te Auporiri/ Te Rarawa) a health coach specialising in women’s health, his children Bella and Oscar, and Tia’s son Noah. And two pups, Apollo and Seth, oh and our cat Papi.

Together Carl and Tia make an awesome team, and with all the kids taking an active interest in their own health, and the health of the planet, the future looks bright.

Carl is available and on call for those in need of accessible and relatable Men’s health support, 7 days a week. In between, you will find him exploring the ocean or forest with his family, gathering a feed, tending to his food forest, or sharing the bounty over a good meal. It is that passion for exploration and fresh wild food, and a love for manaakitanga (or hospitality) that will shine through when you share a kai with Carl. We hope that is very soon!

Welcome to the whanau!
