At Provider - Sustainability is not a buzzword - and it is not something we outsource - it is something we live and breath, and empower others to ‘be the change’ too.
Two fundamental foundational values of our kaupapa are Stewardship and a Reverence to the natural world.
One of the most important ways we practice this, is by leaving the land, in a better place than we found it.
REGENERATION
In 2019 we landed on a beautiful acre of land, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean, Aldermen Islands and back into the hills. In 2019/2020 it looked something like this….
Barren. Years of both farming and pine plantation. Cleared. No trees. No top soil.
Time to get to work!
What have we done with the land since then?
We’ve planted a whole ecosystem, over 1000 plants/trees, some are native, but many are either nitrogen fixing or carbon sequesting
We’ve used Syntropic Permaculture principles to bring the land back to abundance, this means using as little outside resources, like water/irrigation. Crops like bananas, allow us to use mulch lines to reduce the need for irrigation/watering
By growing our own food on our own land, and feeding our guests with this food, we’re reducing our carbon footprint, reducing plastic and waste - but more importantly creating ripples by showing others how to do this too
We’re nourishing the land with compost from all the food waste on our retreats
We have a nose to tail policy with all the fish we catch - but all other ‘waste’ is used as food for our land - eg bones, scales, fish guts etc. All fish are kept whole until we are back on land, and the processing of fish from our trips and charters nourishes the land
We’re reducing plastic and waste, by growing and using our own medicine - plant medicine - and teaching people the medicinal benefits of many easily grown plants
Every retreat participant gets a tour of our land to witness and understand regeneration in action
Because….our own wellbeing is usually directly related to the wellbeing of the land
THE RESULT
In 2026 our land is looking something like this…. (yes, you are looking at the same setting as the photos you saw above!)
We take this same philosophy with us when we head out of town for other retreats, and our Men’s Wellbeing Summit, with a zero waste approach, composting the land we’re fortunate to use, and actively getting the men who attend our events to plant trees, and leave the land better than when we found it.
