PROVIDER DAY TRIP INFORMATION

This information outlines a few things that will help make enjoy trip out on Provider enjoyable.

We aim to provide a complete experience, where you connect with the ocean, with the landscapes around you, where you destress, and where respect is given to nature, which is providing for you. A lot of the information below is written with this in mind.

trip departure

Meeting point is the Old Main Wharf, Wharf Road, Tairua, unless otherwise advised meeting time is approx 7am. Keep in mind where boats, trailers and fishing gear etc are involved, and if some people are travelling through the early morning to get to Tairua sometimes this meeting time might be out a little bit. If you have a lot of your own gear to load on to the boat, your skipper will launch the boat off the trailer once gear is loaded in the car park. We aim to depart Tairua sometime between 7am and 7.30am.

safety

Getting you back in as good or better state than you left is our mission!

With this in mind, please advise us before the trip if you have any health conditions we need to be aware of. The experience can, at times, be full on, especially if we hook a big fish, so please ensure we are aware of what you can and can’t handle.

Provider is a Senator 770RH - it is incredibly safe and stable.

Safety equipment on board is as follows:

-Inflatable life jackets - located on the port side bunks

-EPIRB - located next to the cabin table

-VHF - located above the helm, call sign details next to helm, Coastguard operates on channel 61, emergency channel is 16

-Flares and first aid kit located under the forward facing twin passenger seat

-Fire extinguishers - located behind drivers seat, next to small white Icey Tek (lunch chilly bin)

-Isolation switch - - located behind drivers seat, next to small white Icey Tek (lunch chilly bin)

-Grab rails - everywhere! - ensure you are holding on while underway, especially while crossing the bar

Hazards - please do not carry or handle knives while underway, and be aware all are sharp, Be conscious of the sharp ends of gaffs, of which there are numerous on board.

hydration

Please bring your own water bottles. There may be spare water on board for emergencies, however plan for bringing your own water. We are out on the water for 8 hours, so bring enough.

We’d ideally like to see you jump on with a reusable ‘bottle for life’ type bottle if possible rather than it being a last minute purchase thats thrown away at the end.

You are more than welcome to bring and consume a few beers, especially at the tail end of the trip.

PLEASE DON”T HAVE A MASSIVE NIGHT ON THE BOOZE THE NIGHT BEFORE!! IN 17 YEARS GUIDING I’VE LOST COUNT OF THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO DO THIS, AND 99% OF THE TIME IT ENDS UP WITH SOMEONE BEING SEASICK, DESPITE THE CONDITIONS. ITS A WASTE OF TIME, MONEY AND ENERGY FOR EVERYONE ON BOARD.

clothing

Dress for the conditions.

Thermals are great if its going to be wet or cold, especially in winter.

If there is going to be rain, consider a dry set of clothes for the car later on.

respecting your catch

Have a plan in your head for what you want to do with your catch.

There is no point keeping fish that is not going to be put to good use.

This includes the head, frame and wings - which are some of the best eating parts of the fish.

We have loads of recipes on our website you are welcome to use.

Have a chilly bin in your car that you can take fish home in a cool state.

We are more than happy to spend some time showing you how to look after and fillet your catch if you have never done it before. However, we’re not going to spend hours at the end of a trip filleting every last fish for you if you drop it on us at the end of a big day. Especially if we have already been out 8 hours, and have to get cleaned up for a trip the next day. So have a plan and advise us early on. We can come in early, and spend some time cleaning fish for you back at base as part of your experience.

We can also package a ‘cook your catch’ experience as part of the day, if you advise us before the trip that this is something you would like to experience. It is good to know whether the fishing is a priority for you, or a bit of both fishing and eating it.

Everyone has a different idea, and different knowledge base, and that is cool, so just let us know what works for you in advance.

We also have a fish smoking service we can offer, through a local fish smoker, for $4.50 green weight/kg. The fish comes cured for longevity and vacuum packed. It is a great way to make kingfish especially, last long after your charter. Please advise us before we return to land if this is something you want to do, so that we can ensure the smoker is ready to process your catch that afternoon, and that we get in on time.

other information

-Unless otherwise arranged, all trips should be fully paid into our bank account before departure

-Any trips cancelled due to weather are fully refundable

-All trips are NON SMOKING.

fishing gear

All fishing gear is supplied.

We reserve the right to charge for any gear that is broken or lost by not following the skippers instructions.

The main thing you can do to avoid this, is not high sticking your rod, while hooked up to the fish. Do not lift the rod more than 45 degrees to the line angle, while under pressure. Do not keep the rod in the gimbal belt at the boat.

cancellation policy

Any deposits, once paid, are non-refundable. Our calendar is limited and we can’t afford last minute cancellations.

The exception is for weather - if a trip is cancelled for weather, we can reschedule or a full refund will be made if no alternative date can be found.

In special circumstances, we may allow dates to be moved, depending on timing and availability and with enough notice (generally at least a month out).
