The second annual Trifecta competition was held in Tairua on Fri 28 and Sat 29 Sept 2018, in glorious 5-10 knot conditions. Organised by Provider Charters & Carl Muir Fishing, the competition gave anglers the challenge of catching the trifecta of hapuku, snapper and a kingfish over 2 days of fishing.

A bunch of very keen anglers got together for an awesome celebration of spring fishing, aided by some ice cold DB Export, and some great entertainment back at the Tairua Fishing Club.

There were loads of awesome prizes up for grabs from some awesome sponsors like a DB9 Touch Screen from Furuno, a set of Ocean Blue outrigger bases, a heavy duty mobile fillet bench from TrailorMade, and some awesome Shimano combos sponsored by Hirepool. Tackle sponsors BKK, Nomad Design, Jigstar, Edge Fishing, Burnsco, Bonze and Ocean Angler also got in behind the comp, along with plenty of other sponsors.

The fish bit hard, and there were some quality fish both measured and released, and weighed.

Snapper and kingfish were both on a measure basis, with anglers using the NZ Fishing comp measure mats, and having the choice of releasing their catch once it was photographed, or keeping it. There were some big catches of both species, with the longest kingfish caught on Provider at 123cms by David Watts, and the longest snapper caught on Prophecy at 82cms by Keith Laing. Hapuku were brought in to weigh with the boat Tight 5 cleaning up with the 4 biggest hapuku up to 18kg, the biggest caught by Troy Flavell.

Jigstar put up three special prizes for heaviest jig caught fish in each species, and all three species were caught on jigs.

Four boats managed to catch the trifecta, with the points awarded for a combination of the longest three kingfish, the longest five snapper and 100 points for any hapuku or bass, multiplied by the number of species caught. The boat Prophecy ended up with the highest points of 2403. Five anglers managed to catch the trifecta with the points awarded for a combination of the longest kingfish, the longest 2 snapper and 100 points for a hapuku or bass. Simon Hayward on Prophecy won the angler prize with 996 points.
