Father and Son Fishing Time and Sabins big kingfish
Hi All!
I’m just back in from a ripper of a day out wide with an awesome crew of guys. The East Auckland current has well and truly kicked in, theres some nice blue water pushing in out wide, and the fishing has gone from great to exceptional!
I put the word out Monday night about 2 spots left on our Tuesday fishing charter and wife/mum Teearn signed up her husband Dave and 9yo son Zuma to join the action. Dave and Zuma joined the crew with plenty of good energy, and Zuma was fizzing on the way out. Zuma was super keen to catch a Hapuku and that is what he tried for first. I tied up a three rig dropper with a whole fresh kahawai that escaped the livie tank on the way out, a whole squid, and a live maccie, deployed under the watchful eye and guidance of Dave. Pretty soon the Okuma Tournament bent butt buckled over and line started peeling off the SLX50W! Dave helped Zuma strap into the Black Magic equaliser harness and belt and he went about the hard graft of cranking in what we hoped was a Hapuku.
Sure enough as the reel filled a big fish erupted on the surface and there were hollers all around the boat including a hooooooly! from Zuma.
We headed inshore to chase some kingfish and Zuma passed on a few tips he’d learnt on F&A!! The action was pretty wild with kingfish feasting up hard and we could literally watch the food chain in action under the boat. Both father and son caught kingfish until the arms were burning. A few good a feed and the rest released for another day. Great to see two keen family members out doing what they love, providing fresh food for the family! Get in touch if some quality father and son time is needed in yours!
Also on the trip was one of my regular clients Sabin who has been coming out with me for many years, enjoying some down time doing what he loves - fishing!!!! Sabin usually joins a mixed group I put together and enjoys meeting new fishos in the process. He is always upbeat and brings good energy to the day. On Tuesday he hooked up this his biggest kingfish ever. This fish literally took the jig in front of our eyes as a bait ball erupted under the boat - one of those days on the ocean where you see the food chain in action right in front of your eyes on the Okuma Metalloid12n.
This fish will feed Sabins family through the year as he has a clever way from his homeland of preserving and pickling the meat from the fillets (skin on for all the fatty goodness). The frame and head will be roasted and turned into many packets servings of curry. This to me is what fishing is all about comraderie, relaxation, connecting back with nature and providing fresh healthy food in way that repsects the catch. At 124cms on the mat it looks like it might take out the Hirepool BaitMates year long comp too!
