Some quality solo time fishing
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just need to get out in nature on my own from time to time!
After all the craziness of the first half of 2020, and a very extended lockdown, I spotted my first opportunity to get over the Tairua bar today in 8 weeks++ I have to admit it had really started to eat at me. While I got some foraging in at Level 4 and 3, and a few charters out of Whitianga and Kuaotunu at Level 2 where I was limited to the islands, let’s face it, the weather gods really put the boot in the last 3 weeks.
The next 3 days ain’t looking much better, so there was only one thing to do with a window this morning!! Gap it out there! It felt so amazing to have the freedom to go wherever I wanted!!
I took two setups with me, an Okuma SLX 50W on Tournament Concept Bent Butt for deep drops and CD FastJig Makaira 10seii for jigging. First drop I was hooping and hollering on my own hooked up to a fat puka! Yay! It has been a while since I had fresh hapuku!
Next drop everything went slack on the way down, I put the reel in gear and got railed as Fark! Absolute battle with a horse of a kingi in prime fat winter condition!
I mooched a bit inshore and jigged a kingi, got a nice pup puka for baking whole tonight
Definitely feel ME again after some quality time on the ocean!
Nga mihi Tangaroa!
