Big Day for the Whangamata Boys on the Bluenose

BIG DAY ON THE BLUENOSE

Phil Geddes has been hiring me as a fishing guide since 2010, and on his last fishing charter, where we were chasing marlin, we had a drop for a bluenose to break up the gamefishing. Taking home a feed of bluenose sparked up some interest from his mates in Whangamata, and so we arranged another date to get his mates out.

To make it easier for everyone, I towed down and we launched at Whangamata and we headed out to the mighty Mayor Island to fish the Mayor Knolls.

The water was purple blue on the way out, some of the best water I have seen all year, and it was packed right in to 80metres straight off Whangamata. With skipjack tuna jumping everywhere we popped some lures in and picked up some nice fat skippies for fresh bait.

We got out to the grounds, and while the start was slow, we stuck to our guns and when the bite came on it was thick and fast with some big fat bluenose hitting the decks for Steve 1, Steve 2, Steve 3, Dave the Dentist, and Scottish Phil. The boys and their families and friends will be eating well for a while - you can’t beat bluenose!
