Embracing & Cultivating the Wisdom of Elderhood - A Kōrero with Jerry Beale of the Kauri Brotherhood
In this kōrero I have a conversation with an elder of Men’s Work , Jerry Beale from West Auckland’s Kauri Brotherhood Men’s Group and founder of an organisational leadership training organisation, Culturate. Jerry attended last years innaugrual Aotearoa Men’s Wellbeing Summit, after a lifetime of Men’s Work here in Aotearoa.
We have a rich conversation reflecting on last years event and Jerry’s lived experience in this work. We talk about:
-Jerry’s early years in Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK -His time spent in the Royal Marines, the highs and lows and what was carried from this experience
-Migrating to New Zealand, and stepping into Men’s Work - including time spent at Mana, ManKindProject, Tracks, Rite of Passage Foundation
-Setting up the Kauri Brotherhood in West Auckland -Exploring the Male Archetypes -Why we do this work -Collaboration versus competition
- how to grow into elderhood we need to step away from competition -What Jerry loved about the first Aotearoa Men’s Summit
-The need to bring this work together, swap notes, rub shoulders and support each other
-The rise of toxic masculinity and why grounded masculinity, shared values, culture and radical honesty is the solution
-The disconnect in modern society ”We have forgotten that we are part of something greater”
-Leadership and Stewardship , guardianship of the creators gifts to us, and the Cultural turnaround that is being called in
-Purpose of life, being to care for all living things
-The role of elders to create space for belonging - when to challenge younger men - and when to comfort them -Keeping the elders alive and well - and in purpose
-Finding ways to energise elders and enable them feel part of the fabric of the modern world
-Why men need to do this work separately , before then holding space with women This is a must listen to conversation for men of all ages. Enjoy!
