Cocksy Classic Charity Fishing Comp
Last year Tairua lost a local identity Cocksy after a two year battle with cancer. Cocksy was a well loved and much respected bloke who generously gave a great deal of his time doing good out there in the community. Cocksy was well known as NZ’s most famous celebrity TV builder, but he was also an extremely down to earth guy who loved his fishing, diving and surfing. His wife Dana and a few mates decided to do something poignant to remember him each year, and it is fitting that turned out to be a fishing and diving comp that raised funds for his favourite charity - the Trillian Trek (formerly known as the Variety Bash) - the Cocksy Classic Charity Fishing Comp.
I assembled my A Team for the comp which was held on 8 Feb. Bella, Tia and myself had a plan, that was to target kingfish on rod and reel, and dive for crayfish (on Cocksy’s favourite reef), and to be honest, just have a fun cruisy day out there on the water.
The format for the comp was just awesome, with an emphasis on having fun, and there were heaps of awesome prizes from the generous sponsors, a fair few related to antics on the water! The feed at prizegiving that was part of the entry fee was next level! Bella ended up taking out the average kingfish weight, with a nice fish she caught in close, doing really well to land it in shallow water. I picked up 3rd crayfish. And Tia guessed the average crayfish weight. So we all came away with prizes, as did a lot of the cool crowd that attended.
We donated a full day fishing worth $1800 for a charity auction at the end of the night, and we’re looking forward to getting the team out that bid on it.
Well done Dana and her team for organising one of the coolest comps I’ve done. Dana managed to raise over $13,000 for the Trillian Trek!
We’ll be making it part of the annual calendar, with the next Cocksy Classic Charity Fishing Competition planned for early Feb 2021. Put it in your calendar!
RIP Cocksy!
