May Bluenose and Deep Drop Missions
Kia Ora All!
We’re all back home from 6 big days in the big smoke for the New Zealand Boat Show
It is certainly nice to be home on the Coromandel! As much as it was awesome catching up with so many familiar and new faces, and talking fishing, Tia and I were both zapped when we got home.
A little weather window opened up at the end of the week, and so, with the batteries recharged, the call went out to a few people I met at the show, and we had two trips together to make the most of it.
Our destination both days was Mayor Island, and Mayor has so many awesome deep knolls to prospect around on the Furuno. We were fishing in 300m-500m which is the predominant depth you find bluenose.
The conditions the first day with Henry, Grant & Aaron. were bloody awesome, dead flat, sunny and the bluenose bit hard we even snuck into SE Bay for a late autumn swim!
The next day with Richard, Dave, Chris and Yuri had a bit more of a hint of the storm that was about to roll down the coast, and the bite was a bit later, but everyone still came home with sore arms, plenty of fish, and 3 of the guys ticked off their first ever bluenose, good size at that!
Most of these fish were caught the good old fashioned way, winding on our Okuma SLX reels, with Bent Butt tournament rods. Good exercise and very rewarding once the fish hits the deck!
Bluenose are such a nice eating fish, from nose to tail. It has been awesome seeing photos of some of the dishes the guys have cooked up for their families once returning home.
We’ve been lucky to put a few fillets on to the plate back at home too
This dish…Paleo spiced bluenose with paleo cauliflower puree and salsa verde
